Knots:

  • Reef Knot:  To join two lines of equal thickness (or the ends of the same line, like to loosely tie up a reefed sail on the boom…)
  • Double Sheet Bend:  To join two lines of unequal thickness  (Note: The animation shows the single sheet bend.  Scroll down to see a picture of the double sheet bend.)
  • Figure 8 Knot:  Stopper knot
  • Clove Hitch:  Temporary tie to a spar or pole
  • Clove Hitch using loops:  Temporary tie to a spar or pole
  • Round Turn and Two Half Hitches:  To tie a line to a dock ring
  • Bowline:  To tie an loop that won’t slip.  (i.e.  Tie the foresail sheets to the clew on the foresheet.)
  • Rolling Hitch:  Attach one rope to another where the pull is almost parallel.
  • Belay a Cleat:  To tie to a dock cleat. (Called a Cleat Hitch (Halyard) here.)
  • Sea Coil(For storing and caring for lines.  Called a Gasket Coil here…)
